I left work and my mom's 10th chemo treatment (only 2 more to go!) on Friday with every intention that this was going to be a productive 3 day weekend. I was even plotting different ways I could sweet talk my husband into tackling some home improvement projects (he won't know I was plotting this until he reads this, hi Matt!). But I came home on Friday, sat down with a stack of magazines, iPad, remote, and the dog and that was it for me.
We did some laundry and grocery shopping. I cleaned the bathrooms. And that was it.
It was wonderful and luxuriously lazy. We took naps, lounged, watched too much TV, and I'm not proud of the amount of food I ate over the last 3 days but I'm not sorry either. The rain and overcast weather from Hurricane Issac really helped encourage our slothful behavior.
I went into the long weekend with good intentions but these past 3 days turned out better than I ever could have planned.

Taking An Abby Day
I took the day off today and did nothing and it was absolutely wonderful. No obligations, no email, and I only did whatever I wanted to do. If you are able to take a day like this for yourself, I highly recommend it. And do yourself a favor and set no expectations on the day. I spent the morning sleeping in, enjoying coffee, and catching up on some reading. I didn't get out of my pajamas until 1 PM. It was awesome.
We have been busy lately. Daulton turned 8 last month and I still haven't gotten around to taking the pictures off my camera. We had a great time celebrating with family and friends and I can't believe he is 8 now. He's not the little chubby 3 year old I fell in love with 5 years ago. A smart, funny, and kind young man is in his place.
We went to an Indians game a few weeks ago and had a fantastic time. Daulton's mom got us the tickets and we sat right behind the visitors dugout. The starting pitcher gave Daulton a ball and then later, another player gave him a second ball. Without hesitating, Daulton gave the second ball to the family sitting across the row who didn't have a ball. It was very generous and Matt and I were both so proud of him.
We also got some bad news that my mom has Hodgkins lymphoma. It is 100% treatable with chemotherapy so we are lucky that we can cure it, but it sucks to have to go through it. If you want to follow her journey, I setup a blog at martharardin.com to keep family and friends informed while she goes through this journey. She has already been through one round of chemo and it feels good to have the first one done and we know what to expect for the next round. Daulton took the news very well and has been asking questions. We've talked about what chemo is, that she will lose her hair, and that we have to be extra careful of washing hands and keeping germs away from her.
Baseball has also started for Matt and Daulton. Its quite a shock going from the warmth and temperature controlled climate of basketball to the unpredictable spring weather. I spent the first game with my hat on, snuggled in my fleece, sitting on a blanket, and keeping score with one glove on and one glove off (the glove was too big and I couldn't hold the pencil). I only keep score and not stats and Matt can thank my dad for making me keep score for my siblings games for so many years.
Matt and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last week. Some days it feels like we have been married for forever and then other days it feels like just yesterday. This is not a marriage post but I will say that I feel that being married is a choice and it takes work. Some days are easier than others and I couldn't ask for a better husband.
This is only a small fraction of what we've been up to. Quite frankly, I don't want to write it all out as it exhausts me just thinking about it and I'm sure you don't want to read it. I'm also still writing at Beyond The Defaults so you can also find me over there (and sign up for email alerts) or like us on Facebook if you want to be notified when a new post is up.

A Trip to Louisville
Matt and I spent this past weekend in Louisville, KY. We haven't taken a trip for just the two of us since our honeymoon last year. We chose Louisville because it was close by and we thought the weather in Louisville would be nicer than the weather in Chicago.
I worked a half day on Friday and after packing our bags, we were out the door and in the car. We had scoped out the Hyatt in downtown Louisville before we left and headed there first. The problem with last minute trip decisions is that you do not have time to research. Imagine our surprise that there was a national archery tournament and several conventions going on when we arrived at the Hyatt. We got lucky and were able to get the last room in the Hyatt.
After we settled into our room, we made our way back downstairs to find a place to eat. We had made a friend, Daniel, who worked at the front desk and he suggested we go to the Bluegrass Brewing Company, also known as the BBC.
The BBC was fantastic! I had a cheeseburger and the Altbier and Matt had a Jerk Chicken sandwich and a Purple Nurple beer. Matt fell in love with his sandwich and declared it the best sandwich he has ever had. I think all future sandwiches will be compared to this sandwich. We had a nice stroll back to the hotel where we relaxed for the rest of the evening.
Saturday morning rolled around and we had a lazy morning and enjoyed the views of downtown Louisville from our hotel room. We then packed our bags and checked out as the hotel was completely booked for Saturday night and they had no room for us.
After I was somewhat caffeinated and had some breakfast, we hit the road to go back to Indiana to visit the Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana.
Matt won $25 at the craps table. When I say won, I mean he walked out with $25 more than what he came in with. I don't gamble, so I stood by and watched him play craps. I know that there are rules to craps, but I don't understand them and it looks like they are making up the rules as they go.
After leaving the casino, we stopped at a McDonalds for a snack and to use the free wifi. We then booked our next hotel room at the Galt House. So, we checked into our room at the Galt House and relaxed for a few hours. Do you notice a theme of relaxing? It was wonderful.
We went to the hotel's martini bar, Al J's, for a few drinks and they had the most interesting bar I've ever seen. The bar was actually a huge fish tank and the fish would just swim around as we enjoyed our martinis (Flirtini for me, Bloody Mary martini for Matt and then a beer).
After drinks we hopped in a cab (it was raining outside) and went to 4th Street Live to see a comedy show we had tickets for. If you have never been to 4th Street Live, its an outdoor area in the middle of downtown Louisville with bars and restaurants. David Koechner was the headliner we saw at the Improv Comedy Club. He has most recently appeared as Todd Packer on The Office and was Champ in Anchorman. Overall, his show was disappointing. It had funny moments and was not as good as we expected.
After the show, we walked out of the club to see snowflakes the size of quarters falling from the sky. We were starving and decided to head back to the BBC since we had loved it so much the night before. So we walked several blocks through the snow to get there and we were not disappointed.
Matt decided to get the Purple Nurple again and I tried the Raspberry Meade. Let me tell you about the Raspberry Meade. If wine and beer got married and had a baby, that child would be Raspberry Meade. It was delicious but has a very high alcohol content (7.82%), so they serve it in smaller glasses. Lucky for me, we just had another short walk to our hotel so it was two Raspberry Meades for me.
Overall, it was a great weekend. I am so happy we made the decision to go and spend the weekend together. I know we are together all the time at home, but this was different. We had time to talk and explore the city together. And since next month is our 1 year wedding anniversary (I know, its crazy to me too that it has been a year already), this was a nice way to celebrate our first year of marriage.
